sourcing close-cell styrofoam?

We're putting up window insulation and stuff this week, for obvious reasons, and since our fireplace chimney is cracked and unusable we want to block it off with insulation.

I'm thinking if I can find a block of about 4" thick closed-cell packing foam (the "greasy-feeling" kind) somewhere, like about 27" x 36", then I would be set.

Can you think of a place to buy that around here? It's a big size, TBH

seeks covid stories in print

A colleague on another slack, who follows COVID closely in NYC, is often startled when I mention I know people whose relatives are sick, or that when I was waiting at the estate sale Sunday to pick up my online winnings I overheard that the (sale) owner was away because his parents were both dying.

The friend asks if there is something in print "that describes what it's like here".

I don't read local papers, but maybe something like that?

Anybody know?

UK politics, right to protest campaign

"10 days to save the right to protest… We need your help to persuade Labour to vote against [the Policing Bill which "would allow the government to stop any protest"] in the Lords... We have until mid-January…"

#ProtestIsNotACrime campaign pack (PDF). A Google Drive link the Green Party are sharing, but it can be accessed in a private browser tab. Or LMK & I can upload it someplace else, it's 1.25MB. (Yes a webpage would be better!)

seeks elementary electronics advice

@typingmonkey To get a new one, does it suffice to find any old one that matches the numbers?

I've never known.

seeks elementary electronics advice

@typingmonkey Well TBH the cord is plugged into "SOME PLUG" on the back of the UPS, which because of it being gloomy in that corner and already full of several other plugs might not be anything more than a passthrough.

But I will check.

I don't honestly know if it was already whining at the old location, which is a noisy office with lots of drives.

I have an important desktop book scanner I use frequently. I moved it yesterday & plugged it into a new plug (extension cord on a battery backup).

This morning, the power brick was making such a loud whining sound I thought I was hearing a water leak in the basement, through the floor.

Is a whining power brick (just a black wall wart, nothing extraordinary AFAIK) a concern? Should I try to get a replacement? Ir just plug it better somewhere else?
