@Cornellbox Michigan and Indiana were the first to get hit with the Dark Stores tactic; I think Indiana managed to pass legislation to close that loophole but Michigan's fix died in the state senate in 2016 (and I don't know if was even taken up last year). Michigan specific info from my shop here:

Thanks to a couple of you who sent donations on PayPal recently! (I am actually not sure what your handles are πŸ˜•)

"Do your part" energy conservation plans, like turning lights off when you leave the room, are great for your energy bill, but their job as part of "lowering carbon footprints" is to deflect from the big corporations that actually use the vast majority of the power.

For example, the average US stand-alone home uses ~11,000 kWh per year.

The VERY MOST EFFICIENT roadside LED billboard uses ~61,000 kWh per year. That number rises to ~323,000 kWh at the top end.

For reference, I had been using Tootdon but I'm trying out Toot! today and quite liking it so far:

What iPhone Mastodon client are you using? (and would you recommend it?)

In other news, I'm watching dev, and at some point in the future we could start running an A2mi community Instagram alternative. I've reserved the domain just in case πŸ˜‰

Breakdown of current monthly costs:

Server: $10
Backups: $2
Media storage: $1-$2
Domain name: $10 yearly = ~$1/month

The site costs ~$14 per month to run.

In total thus far, this site has cost ~$90 to run, and I've received $98 in donations from many of you. Thank you for your support!

If you're enjoying this community, please consider sending a couple bucks to keep the site running into February and beyond:

(And let me know if you'd prefer for me *not* to thank you publicly for the contribution.)

New status page: , which I'll update if there are issues which make this site inaccessible.

Observing family interactions with their iPhones. Notes:

1) selling 16GB phones for so long is still doing huge damage to Apple's customer sat

2) people really, really don't trust software updates ("I have automatic updates turned off, but the phone still downloaded it overnight!!")

Via @andrew, is a really cool blogpost if you like music and/or compression and/or data vis

Cleaning up a customer's PC, I made the mistake of leaving a tab open on Yahoo's home page. Only 1 minute later: malvertized. Sunuva...

I did it again to pin down the cause, & indeed it's Yahoo's ads breaking out, taking over the page, & loading scary messages that make it difficult to leave.

I can't stress enough, folks, that an ad blocker is Internet SECURITY software.
