@sedward5 If you are close enough to a big repeater - and N8DUY surely qualifies - even a very cheap 2m handheld mobile radio with a weak antenna will do the trick on receive.
Transmit is harder and depends on power and elevation and gain from the antenna and whether you are indoors or outside. (RF is weird, of course).
I listen easily from downstairs but to reliably transmit at home on my HT I need to be in the attic or use a 50w radio. (We live in a low spot.)
@w8emv good to know. I’ll mess around with an HT and see what my level of commitment would need to be.
Programming the cheapest radios can be unreasonably hard from the front panel. Look for one supported by CHIRP would be my recommendation.
