oh ha ha i kind of chuckled when i read the first paragraph of an abstract from 30+ years ago

Part of the attraction is the vast need for operating system hacking on these 80x86-based computers -- laptop manufacturers apparently encourage their customers to run MS-DOS and its derivatives!"
